Okay, enough with the polls, it's time to get off my butt and on with this.

As indicated by a series of polls I've run, I'm going to host a Deviant Art contest for both art and writing. Given the substantial differences between the two art forms, I will be judging them separately and awarding prizes for each. And as also indicated by the polls, I'll be judging them myself. More on the criteria below.

THEME

The poll here was pretty overwhelming: You wanted to see one of my original characters along with another DA OC. So in both contests, that is the underlying requirement. You can choose from any of my OCs, including villains. And you have the vast array of DA OCs to team them with. Of course you can use your own OC, but if you want to use someone else's, just make sure you get permission from the character's owner first. Also remember that the two characters must be featured prominently in the story or artwork.

RULES

  • The story or artwork must be new and original; this means the submitter must be its owner/creator and it can't be something you've posted previously.
  • Art: It can be any medium: digital, drawn, painted, photographed, sculpted, a combination… whatever! So long as you're able to scan it or what have you and submit it to DA.
  • Writing: The entry (or entries, if it has multiple chapters) must be a work of fiction, a story in other words, and the story must be complete, with a beginning, middle, and an end. (Well, okay, more or less—I'll allow for creative bucking of conventions if it's done well. If it's done well.) Aside from that it can take any format and length you want.
  • It must comply with DA content guidelines, obviously.

HOW TO SUBMIT

First, get down on your knees. Now look up at me, but don't make eye contact... oh, wait, sorry, wrong type of submission! Oops emote Heh...

  1. Post the artwork or story to your own DA page.
  2. In the description area of your DA posting, include a callout to me (colon+icon+dangerguy01+colon – just remove the "+" symbols and replace the word "colon" with the actual punctuation mark)…
  3. and include words to the effect of "Dangerguy Spring 2018 Contest Submission".
  4. Indicate which of my OCs is being used to qualify as your contest entry, along with which and whose DA OC my character is paired with.
  5. Just to be on the safe side, also send me a DA note with a link to the image's DA page.

PRIZES

A minimum of five entries in each category (writing and art) are required for prizes to be awarded in that category. Remember, each category gets prizes! (No, you don't have to create five entries yourself, I mean five entries in total for both the art and writing categories...)

  1. First Prize: 1000 DA points and a free commissioned image
  2. Second Prize: 500 DA points and a free pinup image
  3. Third Prize: 250 DA points and a free portrait image

DEADLINE

Midnight PST on April 30th, 2018.

ANTICIPATORY FAQ

So who are your OCs?

Obviously the Night Watch (Duster, Black Phantom, Midnight Avenger, Night Angel, & Whirlwind), Indigo Dynamo, and Duster's rogue's gallery of villains. There's a comprehensive list on my commission page. If you're unsure, or if you have any questions that are not answered here, please post a comment below (rather than sending me a note; that way everyone can see the answer).

What do you mean by "featured prominently"?

The chosen OCs should be one of the main characters in the story or art. They should be directly involved in the action. They should not be someone merely mentioned in passing; nor should they be someone who pops up for only one scene just to move the plot along. In the art, they should be the foreground figures, not an obscure figure in the background.

Do the OCs used have to be female?

Nope! But I would highly advise including at least one lovely lady if you want a chance at winning.

For fiction: Does the story have to fit within the "canon" of your own fiction?

Yes and no.

No: You do not have to fit your story into the timeline or events of my own. Please feel free to indulge your flights of fancy. If you want to transport the characters to another setting (like I do with Sci-Fi Duster or with the fantasy-world Raiders comic series), go ahead. As with some of my own images series that end with the heroine apparently in permanent captivity or what have you, I regard these as each taking place in a separate "alternative universe". If your story doesn't fit with my own I'll regard it the same way.

Yes: The characters should be roughly consistent with how I've described and portrayed them. Don't portray a smart character (like Duster) acting dumb. She can make mistakes, of course, we all do, but she's not a bimbo. (Yes I'm aware this may be a case of "do as I say, not as I do". Shaddup.)

What criteria will you use to judge the winners?

My own judgment. Please have a look at my two previous contests (April 2017 Art / Fall 2017 Writing) to get a better idea at my preferences and peccadilloes. I like action, I like sexiness, I like peril, I like humour... but by all means follow your own muse to ensure the best result.

A broader hint for the artists: I'm a story-teller at heart, so for art I tend to prefer images that also tell a story, or that seem to capture an instant from a larger set of events. This is not to say that I don't enjoy a really top-notch pinup, but in a contest my preferences come to the fore.

And some hints for the writers: All the mechanics like grammar, spelling, punctuation, paragraphing, and so on all count. If you're not strong in any of those areas, get some help with them before submitting. If your story is a chore to read it's not going to help your chances. Also, as Monty Python sez, get on with it. Don't spend oodles of time world-building or delving into your characters' shopping habits or what have you. Stories are about conflict, especially in this genre; the sooner you get to that, the more pleased I'll be.

Finally there are certain things I'm not into as far as sexual fetishes and perils go so you'd do well to stay away from them:

  • Dismemberment, vivisection, or any excessive gore
  • Scat (or other body waste)
  • Hermaphrodite/She-males
  • Minors (characters must be 18 years of age and older)
  • Real-life people (fictional characters only, please)
  • Feet
  • Furries
  • My Little Pony

Can I submit more than one entry? In more than one category?

Yes! However, I'll only award one prize per contestant in each category. That means it is possible to win one prize for art and one for writing, but not both the 1st and 2nd place prizes for art, for example.

If I win first prize… what form will that "free commission" take?

That will be one of my digital artworks, a standard one that I normally sell for $25. Existing characters only for this; please see my commission page for a list of them. As for examples, just check my Commission gallery folder.

Okay. What about the second prize "pinup" image?

That will also be a digital artwork but simpler. It will portray a single character of the 2nd place winner's choice in a full-body pinup image with a costume but no background. Existing characters only. Image size will be 1920 x 3100 pixels.

And the third prize "portrait" image?

Yet another digital artwork, smaller and simpler still than the 2nd prize pinup. This will again portray a single character of the 3rd place winner's choice, though it must be chosen from my list of existing characters. The portrait will not be full-body; it will consist of a head-and-torso image with, again, no background. Image size will be 1000 x 1000 pixels.
